The 300 men and women who participated in the study received guidance and support in making dietary changes and adhering to a diet. In addition, everyone received either olive oil or nuts.

When researchers compared participants over the age of 70 to those under the age of 60, there was an equal number of participants in both age groups. Age also did not affect how conscientiously the diet was maintained.

The health benefits of the Mediterranean diet were equally evident regardless of age. Adherence to the diet lowered blood pressure, improved cholesterol levels, and lost weight at three-year follow-up. All of these changes reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and many other illnesses. It is possible that the results would be different in a study with less support.

The study was published in the European Journal of Nutrition.
